Natural/Botanical Ink is far more complex than we realize! Each bottle of ink made drop by drop is alive and tells a unique story!

I have found that producing ink is most straightforward when you keep an open mind. When the unexpected occurs, it’s more often than not, a happy accident in creating something unique.

You get the chance to learn how the color of your own landscape functions and how factors such as time, temperature, geography, changing seasons, and the different parts of a plant harvest produce different outcomes every single time. You get to see how these inks on paper change colour with time, some get darker due to oxidation and some get lighter due to exposure to light. That is why natural inks are called “living colours” since they change their characteristics based on their environment and that’s the most fascinating thing to observe in a sketchbook over time.

The process of creating handcrafted ink is exquisite, meditative, and creative. Foraging or sourcing ingredients, their transformation into a colourful liquid, the alchemy of blending them, and the ever-changing environment are what make up these “stories in a bottle.”
